Are they any fees for adding money to digital IC card?
The only way that you can reserve/change assignment of the seat online is buying it through their official website, correct? And that can be purchased up to a month ahead of your travel date I think?
What was the website you said you fill all your paperwork out at before you got there? Also what is that website good for?
Visit Japan Web services.digital.go.jp/en/visit-japan-web/ It's for entering trip information (such as address of your hotel) to expedite Immigration and Customs procedures once you arrive in Japan.
@KenshoQuest awesome ill check this out. One more question, it's been a number of years since I've been in japan did you have a similar packing list for sakura season?
@@killerangel-qy9ug I haven't made a spring packing list video yet. We did just visit in winter + spring. It's still pretty cool in spring, so we kept wearing most of our warm long-sleeve clothes and only stopped wearing our hats/mittens/snow boots. I plan to make a spring list!
@KenshoQuest kool thank you so much for the replies. Looking forward to your next videos
I read once tha it has a problem if you get a eletronic suica regarding using smartEX for shinkansen.. I remember it only work IF your card is registered.. wich is only possible via the SUICA APP.. Would you know something regarding this subject?
In order to designate an IC card on SmartEX you need to know the full IC card number. If you have a digital SUICA it doesn't show the entire card number. In order to find out what your digital SUICA card number is, you need to also install the SUICA Finance app. Once you've installed the app: - Open the Suica card in Apple Wallet - Tap on the three dots icon (...) on the top right corner of the phone - Select "Card Details" - Select "Open" in Suica Finance App - In the Suica Finance app, you will see the Suica card that you added -- tap on the card and you will see the full card number. Personally, I found this whole process easier with my digital PASMO. As soon as I installed and opened the PASMO Finance app, it showed my full number right away. Here's our video on buying Shinkansen tickets on SmartEX: ua-cam.com/video/KglsSHuex0Q/v-deo.html
@@KenshoQuest thank you very much!
so which is the best ic card for shopping ?
Any of the 10 interoperable IC cards should be accepted by stores and shops that accept payment by IC card.
Hi. Great video. I have a Nimoca card from my last trip to Fukuoka. I wish to travel from Tokyo to Odawara station. Can I solely rely on my Nimoca card? For normal regular train of coz
The pasmo card is the one to get as it is the only card that you can put the 24 hour Tokyo metro pass on.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing.
@@KenshoQuest no worries! And that was as of earlier this year, so they might have changed or will change. Keep making great content and enjoying life!
Thanks, this is handy. As I'm planning to fly into Osaka and depart Tokyo, it seems the Icoca is the one I need. I have an Android phone, so a good excuse to get the special Icoca card 😉
Good plan!
Too many options, I can't be bothered. The whole system needs to be simplified.
It's not a waste if you're keeping it and not throwing it in the garbage, it'd make a nice edition to anyone's scrapbook for example.
Thanks Kensho Quest for your guides in Japan. We got 8 pasmo cards in Haneda when we arrived in June 9, 2024. No pasmo passport though. Not sure how this will last.
Thanks for letting us know!
Hi, please guide us, there is a news in the prominent news paper in India that Japan sees rise in one dangerous bacteria. Do you have any idea about this ? Please let us know.
Hi my family and I are travelling to japan in june this year , how concerned should we be about the STSS outbreak? Should we cancel our trip?
June 2024 I was able to get 3 Suica cards for myself and daughters at Narita airport.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Hi do you have any suggestions for where to store valuables such as a laptop overnight? Coin locker ?
I wouldn't suggest leaving valuables such as a laptop in a coin locker. Our laptops are something we always try to keep with us, or in our hotel room. You might be able to store a suitcase at your hotel after checking out, and then come back for it the next day. We've often been able to leave a suitcase with our hotel for 1-3 days.
@KenshoQuest thankyou. I am going away from tokyo for one night to climb mt fuji and don't want to be lugging laptop up the mountain!
Oh wow what a life saver this video is, $15 may not be a lot but after a few transactions it will add up. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome!
Another excellent video! I downloaded the digital SUICA card on my iPhone but assumed that was it, and had to spent 45 minutes in the drizzle at a tram stop in Hiroshima (our first port of call) getting the card set up properly. So get this sorted out before your arrival in Japan - it may involve checking your mobile phone settings as well as preferred credit card activations before it works. But once it does, it's smooth sailing topping it up and using it at subway stations, convenience stores and drink vending machines.
Glad you got it figured out and thanks for sharing valuable information!
Hi! Re coin lockers - are these generally safe to leave stuff in for a few days do you think? Also, are there ones big enough for a check in size suitcase?
Hi. Most coin lockers are for one day only. There are some that you can use for 3 days straight, but those are not as common. A large size locker should fit a regular checked suitcase. Here’s our video specifically about luggage lockers and other storage options: ua-cam.com/video/dsUGncWTVm8/v-deo.htmlsi=HahiePpraeP7glHB In general coin lockers are safe, but I wouldn’t leave valuables inside.
@@KenshoQuest Thank you for your response, and so promptly! I am checking out your other video now :-)
👍🏽
I have question can i top up my digital suica card with cash at 7/11 or any train station
Hi, yes at any station, thought tiny stations may not have a charge machine. And most 7-11s especially nearby. stations will be no problem.
Hello. My wife and I are going to Japan this year.Would we need two welcome suica cards for transport purposes? Regards.
Yes, each individual person needs their own separate IC card.
Thanks for the info and recommendations. Is it possible to register three persons within one Digital IC Card?
Hi. Each person needs their own separate IC card for transportation. If you want to use digital cards, each person needs their own digital card on their own smart phone.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks.
If using smartEX to buy Shinkansen then can you use passimo virtual card ? Though it needed to be suica
Hi, yes if you have a digital PASMO IC card, you can link it to your Smart EX ticket to ride on the shinkansen. You do not need a Suica. It can be any of the 10 interoperable cards as they all work across Japan. But for the virtual digital cards you can choose between PASMO, Suica or ICOCA. Again it doesn't matter which one you get. We recommend the digital PASMO because in some instances you will need your full IC Card number and the only way you can get that is with the PASMO app which has an English translation unlike Suica.
We are planning to go to Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo next week. Do you recommend Welcome Suica, Pasmo Passport, Toica, or Manaca ? Arrive at Narita, then domestic flight to Nagoya. Then shinkansen to Osaka and Tokyo. I thought about Pasmo passport, but watching your video, I can accept your other recommendation. Thank you.
Which city will you fly into? Whichever city you will fly into, get the IC card offered there. As long as it’s one of the ten interoperable cards.
@@KenshoQuest Nagoya city, Tokyo, and Osaka city. Can Pasmo be used in Nagoya ? Or can Manaca/Toica be used in Tokyo & Osaka?
@@ap2445 As long as you get one of the 10 major IC cards it will work in all those cities. When you arrive at Narita, if you have time, you could get SUICA/Welcome SUICA or PASMO Passport. Or just wait until you get to Nagoya and get either TOICA or Manaca. It doesn’t matter which one of those you get.
@@KenshoQuest thank you for your information.
Get a digital IC; I got one digital for my iphone, one digital for my Applewatch (for whatever reason they don’t cross platforms so you need one for each) and SO CONVENIENT!!!
Thanks for sharing! I am having trouble to add suica and pasmo card in apple wallet using Visa payment. Checked online a lot of people are having same trouble not only add new card but top up existing card with varities of credit cards. Not sure how to solve this.
👋 Try the Apple Master Card. Used it for Suica IC digital on my iPhone in April. Was Perfect! Just linked it for a Shinkansen trip in 2 weeks on the EX App. 👍
Hi, we agree. We understand that it requires getting another credit card but the Apple Card ( Mastercard ) works every time for us. Many have trouble with Visa, not just for topping up your digital IC card but using your credit card online for many Japanese companies you will run into issues. Apple Card usually works.
Why are they making it so confusing??? Use on card for everywhere!!! It would be so convenient. Leave it to japan to screw up something so simple. You dont need 10 different credit cards. Why do you need 10 different cards for traveling??? HMMMM???
Hi, fair question. The main reason why is that there are six different private JR companies as well as governments in different prefectures that are selling these IC cards. They each offer additional perks for locals in their areas which is one of the reasons they have their own cards. Luckily, they decided to work together!
Great information. Just one small correction- September is PDT, not PST.
Oops! We don’t live in California anymore and I just use PST out of habit. I forgot that it alternates.
~20 years now Only use Suica card (with name on it), mostly Osaka & Tokyo trips but when go Hokkaido or elsewhere get a 3-4 day AREA PASS which gives you unlimited travel on those days. Area passes are better value for short trips. 35 trips to Japan so far❤😘 🧳🛫🚉🚝🚠♨️🧖♂️
OK I watched the whole video but found it a little confusing. Can you please tell me which IC cards I will need for Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto? Thanks!
Any of them.
Which city will you fly into? If you arrive in Tokyo, get Welcome SUICA or regular SUICA, if available. If you arrive in Osaka, get ICOCA. You only need to get one of the interoperable cards and then you can use it through Japan.
I just came back from Japan a couple of days ago. We went to osaka and when I got off at KIX, I got an icoca card from the machine no problems.
Perfect! Thanks for sharing.
I buy Pasmo card😊
What IC card shall I get if I will be traveling in Tokyo and Kyoto areas? Thank you for all your information and making Japan travel less stressful 😁
If you arrive in Tokyo, get the Welcome SUICA (or regular SUICA, if available). If you arrive in Osaka/Kyoto area, get the ICOCA card.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks. Will be I able to use SUICA card in Kyoto? I will start my travels in Tokyo and going to Kyoto after.
@@irinaphillips8962 Yes
What is the difference between the credit, saving, and checking account types? You have a credit card that is connected to a single bank account. Why in the world do you need that screen at all? I have seen that screen only in Japan and the US. And it's always very confusing.
Hi. They are three different types of financial accounts. A checking account allows a person to make deposits and withdrawals to pay for every day expenses. A savings account allows for making deposits and storing money, but the number of withdrawals allowed per month may be limited. The money stored in a savings account may earn interest. A credit account doesn't have any money stored in it, instead it allows the person to borrow money from the issuer to make purchases. Some countries refer to "checking" as "current". I have a debit/bank card that allows me to withdraw from either my checking or savings account. Separately, I have a credit card, but I never use that in an ATM, as it would incur "cash advance fees" and a very high interest rate.
I still have my ICOCA card from my first trip to Japan in 2019, but forgot to bring it with me on my most recent trip to Japan last year. I had to get the 30 day Welcome Suica card at Narita airport when they were still available. I do plan on going to Japan again with the hope of using my ICOCA card before it expires in 2029. Speaking of which, are regular IC cards still only valid for 10 years from when they are issued?
It is valid for 10 years from the last time it was used. So if you use it before it expires, it will be valid for another 10 years.
Exactly! Regular IC cards are valid for 10 years after last use.
@@KenshoQuest Is it 10 years from the last use or 10 years from the last recharge? I've read both. In practical terms, it probably doesn't matter since you would recharge the card anyway.
@@myamadadds “If not used for a period of 10 years, the Suica becomes invalid. @@myamadadds It's 10 years from last use. So every time you use it, it resets.
WIll Pasmo be replacing their Tourist IC card? We're going this December. Thanks for the great videos.
Hi, we do not know for sure yet but we were told that PASMO will just be issuing their regular card as the replacement. We hope this means they will be available.
After payment of the ticket via klook app, how long the QR code will be sent ? Via email or can see in the app. I am considering to buy from klook app only after i reach narita airport and clear immigration. Just to make sure we dont miss the train
HI, as long as you are purchasing a ticket for an area that uses the QR code method (ex: Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka ) you will receive the QR Code both in an email as well as in the Klook App. Then at Narita you can visit the JR ticket machine and get your ticket right away. or wait until you get to the train station where you will board the shinkansen.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks for your reply. The QR code will be sent to email immediately after payment or it wil take few hours ?
Let me see if I understand this right... I will be travelling from Kawaguchiko to Kanda Sation and google maps says that I need to take a local train to Otsuki and then a limited express to Kanda. In that case I just use my Icoca to go from Kawaguchiko to Otsuki, leave the station and then enter again to ride the limited express from Otsuki to Kanda right? And can I buy the limited express ticket in Kawaguchiko or even in Kyoto before leaving? Or I need to buy it in Otsuki? Thank you in advance
Ok, I'm sorry, I go to google maps again and it's not a limited express from Otsuki to Kanda, it's the Chuo Special Rapid... in that case I just use the Icoca for the entire route right? Don't need to buy another ticket or pay more right? And don't need to reserve seats right?
Hi. It looks like there are multiple types of trains to choose from when traveling from Otsuki Station to Kanda Station. If you take a Special Rapid or local train, you should be able to pay with just your ICOCA card. If you take a Limited Express train from Otsuki to Shinjuku (and then change trains), you would need to buy a Limited Express Surcharge ticket to go along with your IC card, for Otsuki to Shinjuku.
I’m going to Tokyo at the end of August for the first time and landing in Narita. You said the Welcome Suica is not available there, the regular Suica may not be available, and the Passmo Passport is being discontinued in August. Now I’m a bit concerned because I don’t know what will be available and where to look once I land in the airport.
Hi, I understand your concern. Please do not worry as the PASMO Passport is supposed to be replaced by the regular PASMO. We will make an update as we get close to August as this is a big concern for both Suica and PASMO.
Love the astro boy card !! We still have our suica cards from 5 years ago , we use them when we come back 😊
Cards have a 10 year expiry so you're good 👍 I use android but if you use an iPhone can use digital app to top up cards.
Not all cards. The Kansai One Pass doesn't have an expiration date for example.
One more question: about "crossing different areas" with an IC card: does this mean that I cannot travel starting from Odawara, for example, to Shizuoka? Doing such would "block" my SUICA (example) and I need to see some attendant to be able to unlock it before continue to travel and to be able to use the card? Or it just means that, arriving from Odawara to Shizuoka I first need to exit from the "paid" part of the station and re-enter (using the SUICA) before travelling again?
Hi, if you plan to take a local train, you will most likely need to change trains when leaving JR East region into JR Central. In this case you will most likely change trains at Atami Station which is JR Central. By changing trains here you will exit the ticket gate then reenter at Atami Station for Shizuoka. If you take the Shinkansen, there is no problem since you will purchase a separate ticket and will not be using your IC card.
@@KenshoQuest Thanks!
Thanks for video!! I have read somewhere that there are machines fo exchange a great number of coins (in Japan is common to have to carry A LOT of small coins) into IC cards or digital tokens... they are generic ones and are specialized with coins, maybe also with foreign coins (I need to confirm this fact), can You tell more about this please?
I've heard of those machines, but haven't personally used them. Here's a website explaining: allabout-japan.com/en/article/8720/
So many IC card(s)? So old tech. In Singapore you can just tap your credit card.😁 I'm too old for an ASTRO boy themed card. I guess it's better than Hello Kitty.🤣
Aloha @darrylk808, Japan is testing out credit cards in some areas! The big issue is Japan has so many different companies selling IC cards and there are individual benefits for local users when they purchase the card in their region. As you know Singapore is tiny and would be easier to implement their use of credit cards across the island state. I don't think you are too old for Astro Boy as it was famous back in the 1950s 🤪. I personally, would be happy with a Hello Kitty card ;) 🤙🏼
U think for October they will have the 10 year suica card
I have bought one a few days ago.
Did you get it at Narita? Or somewhere else?
We are hopeful!
@KenshoQuest in the train office. Not in the airport. When I was at the airport nobody told me to buy it)))
Your videos are always useful and detailed yet well paced and enjoyable. You've been a real help in planning our upcoming trip. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words! We hope you have a wonderful trip to Japan.
Thank you so much for the amazing explanations, your videos are truly life saving. I've got one question regarding the travel between different areas, how does one know if the trip they take is going to change areas?are there any signs in the stations?
Hi, great question! In some places there are clear signs but in most there will not be any signs. Therefore, if you have traveled a long distance ( more than across town ) consider tapping out of the gate first if you need to make a train change. Don't worry if you don't as the gates won't let you pass if you did! There will be an attendant window at either the left or right sides of the exit gates, just see them.
